NIOS - National Institute of Open School is an autonomous organization established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)
with a vision to provide “Sustainable inclusive learning with universal and flexible access to quality school education and skill development.”
The core objective of the National Institute of Open School is to foster institutional capabilities throughout India to cater to the needs of
heterogeneous group of learners from elementary level to pre-degree level. Originally started as a project with inbuilt flexibilities by
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 1979, it subsequently evolved into an autonomous institution in 1989, pursuant to the
National Education Policy, 1986.
The amalgamation of the pilot project of CBSE on open school with NIOS was solidified through a resolution dated 14th September 1990,
published in the gazette of India on 10th October 1990, the National Open School was bestowed with the authority to register, examine
and certify students to pre-degree level courses . In July 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) amended the mission of NIOS.
